Samuel Marsden
1765-1838
Samuel Marsden was the second minister in Australia. He arrived with his wife and first child in 1794. Their son was born on the ship during the long and hard journey. Samuel Marsden immediately began work caring for the spiritual needs of the people. He carried on this work in the face of great hardships. He and his young family were struck with loneliness. But devastating tragedy would also strike. Their two oldest children were both killed in separate accidents. There was also the battle of bringing the Word of God to the people. Many were hardened by the harshness of their own lives. They did not want to hear God's message of salvation through Jesus Christ. Yet Marsden knew they needed this most of all.
Like Richard Johnson, the first minister in Australia, Samuel Marsden was called by the Governor to act as a magistrate in the local courts. Christian men were much sought after because of their strong moral character and sound judgement.
Samuel Marsden became involved in farming. It was thought he was about the best farmer in the colonies. Through his hard work, he became quite wealthy. He was criticised by some who believed it wasn't right for a minister to be so involved in business. However it is possible this criticism came from people who didn't like Marsden's strong Christian beliefs.
Samuel Marsden was committed to looking after the spiritual needs of the people. Through his farming he also helped supply the colony with food and jobs for people. People still argue today over Samuel Marsden's choices. Did he neglect his caling as a minister in favour of business?
Perhaps some of Samuel Marsden's actions speak loudest about his true Christian character. For example, with some of the wealth he gained he bought a ship and sailed with missionaries to New Zealand. This introduced Christianity to New Zealand for the very first time. In addition to his work in New South Wales Samuel Marsden would personally make seven trips across the Tasman spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
