Caroline Chisolm
1808-1877
Caroline Chisolm was born Caroline Jones in England. Her father was a wealthy farmer. At a youn age she was taken to the house of an injured soldier. Her father said the children should help someone who fought for them. It is believed this experience helped shaped her life's work of caring for those in need.
Caroline Jones married Archibald Chisolm when she was 22. He was Roman Catholic, so she adopted that religion.
The Chisolms arrived in New South Wales in 1838. Caroline was quick to start working for those in need. She would meet the ships that cnme in then make contact with the young girls. She helped them find jobs and sheltered them in her own home.
She lobbied for support to build a women's shelter. Being Catholic in a mostly Protestant colony, she at first faced resistance. Despite this, her determination and philanthropic spirit saw succæs. The shelter housed ninety women and helped them find jobs.
Caroline Chisolm is remembered as one who devoted her life to helping disadvantaged women. She is one of Australia's philanthropists.
