Prayer for Federation
The time leading up to the Federation of Australia was a time of much thought and prayer for the people of Australia. Australia's supreme law, the Constitution was to be decided on. While there is no record of a formal day of prayer, the people of Australia united in prayer over the Constitution. Many wanted to make sure God was put in His rightful place of Sovereign ruler over Australia. The Sydney Morning Herald, 14th April 1897, published the following editorial:
"No Christian could in conscience vote for a Federation Bill that did not recognise God!"
The prayers of the Australian people resulted in the preamble of the Constitution containing the words:"...humbly relying on the blessing of Almighty God..."
